Thematic workshops

YEAR GROUP

o Bienvenue à Versailles

This workshop is aimed at enabling young learners to discover the French monarchy at the time of Versailles through a range of fun and interactive language games and craft activities.

• Students will first learn some basic key vocabulary related to the monarchy, and they will then play with the vocabulary for colours in French before combining these two learning topics in a short writing task. The final activity is about craft and recapping on colours: colouring King Louis XIV and making your own crown!

o Prononciation : l'alphabet et les voyelles

This workshop will help your students get a good start on basic sound patterns in French through pronunciation games. 

• Students will gain an understanding of the French alphabet and vowel system. On a practical level, they will be able to ask about and spell their name; if you choose the longer workshops, they will further learn about theory and differentiate between the many sounds of the letter -E, and the difference between -OU (ex: la roue) and -U (ex: la rue). The last part of the workshop is dedicated to a very popular French spelling game called "Le Pendu" where students will work in teams to guess about French cultural highlights (e.g. la Tour Eiffel, Victor Hugo, etc).

o Le questionnaire : faisons connaissance !

This workshop is designed to revise basic introductions by focusing on the grammatical structures to ask questions in French.

• Through language games, students will first practise forming basic open questions (name, age, nationality...) in the "tu" and "vous" persons, as well as revise the key verbs ETRE, AVOIR and S'APPELER, and finally brush up on their knowledge of numbers. They will then create their own questionnaire re-using all of the above grammar points, and interact with native staff members of Alliance Française to fill it out.
• More advanced groups will also get the opportunity to go over the grammatical structures to ask more independent closed YES/NO questions in their questionnaire.

• Students will gain confidence in grammatical gender patterns (mon/ma, le/la, etc) and be able to describe their own family tree. The last part of the workshop is dedicated to discovering the very popular French card game "Les 7 familles" where students will be able to re-use their knowledge orally while playing in small groups, with the added bonus of finding out about the traditional costumes of 7 regions of France.

o Atelier Lunch Croque-Monsieur

• The workshop will first take place as a language lesson with interactive activities to become familiar with topical vocabulary and the history of this dish. Then, the students will move to the kitchen area where they will each prepare their own croque-monsieurs (2 per student) and then enjoy their cooking for lunch.
  

o Bienvenue à Versailles

This workshop is aimed at enabling students to discover the French monarchy at the time of Versailles through a range of fun and interactive language games and craft activities.

• Students will first learn some key vocabulary about the monarchy, and they will then work on the family tree of King Louis XIV to gain an understanding of French History and the main characters around the time of Versailles. This will also enable them to revise topical vocabulary about family. Students will then have the opportunity to link their knowledge about the French monarchy to the current British monarchy. The workshop concludes with a quiz to recap on the cultural contents of the session.
• In the longer version of the workshop, we offer team craft activities for the students to build their own Versailles castle, on paper and/or online!

o A la rencontre des soldats de la Première Guerre Mondiale

• Students will get to know the many international soldiers involved in World War 1 and identify the corps they belonged to. In the longer version of the workshop, they will further gain knowledge in the battles they took part in.
• The aim is to bring this crucial part of the world's History closer to the students, by enabling them to be active learners and make sense of a topic they may otherwise see as distant and foreign.

    Year 9-10 : ACLFRC110/ACLFRC115

o Première Guerre Mondiale : un saut dans le passé

• Students will gain insight into the triggers of World War 1, how alliances formed and events subsequently unfolded. In the longer version of the workshop, they will further become familiar with the daily lives of the soldiers in the trenches.
• The aim is to bring this crucial part of the world's History closer to the students, by enabling them to be active learners and make sense of a topic they may otherwise see as distant and foreign.

o Découverte culturelle : l'Afrique francophone

• Starting off with a speaking activity, students will be challenged to learn about the "francophonie" and the "Organisation Internationale de la Francophonie". Then, using official documentation from the OIF, they will enjoy active reading by investigating about 4 French-speaking countries in Africa. Finally, using their listening skills, they will discover African humour through short videos of a one-man-show on African proverbs.

  Y11-12

o Preparation for the DELF Junior / Scolaire exams

This workshop is designed to prepare students for the DELF A2-B1 Exams and focuses on the speaking and writing skills to be assessed.

• Students will become familiar with the format of the exam and will be guided to develop effective strategies for the speaking and writing tasks by observing and analysing past papers and model answers. They will then get opportunities to try out these new strategies and gain confidence in the safe environment of informal mock tasks, individually and/or in small groups, and receive feedback to take home as a basis for further training.
• The DELF B1 diploma allows students to take part in study exchanges with French universities without further language testing required.
